Dry-disconnect couplers are used to make and break connections in a liquid or gas transfer system, when you want to keep the product you are transferring contained.

There are various ways of connecting the two halves of a dry-disconnect coupling (a coupling is composed of two parts; a coupler and an adapter), with bayonet style (insert and rotate) and camlock (cam arm retained) being the most popular.

The dry-disconnect feature is maintained through an interlock system which keeps you from disconnecting while the dry-disconnect valve is open; or through the use of an emergency shut off system, which slams shut in case of an accidental disconnect while transferring product.

The valve in the dry-disconnect is activated, in the case of a bayonet style, through rotating past the coupled position to a full open position. To disengage the dry-disconnect, the valve must be shut first before additional rotation allows you to disconnect.

The valve is activated in a cam-locked dry-disconnect by a handle being rotated. The dry-break feature is maintained through the use of an interlock system, or through the use of a spring-loaded seal cylinder, which slams shut if required.

Additionally, there are interlocked ball and butterfly valve dry-disconnect systems.
